Food for Thought: How long are my online visitors staying on my site for?

Knowing how much time your online visitors are spending on your website pages gives you an idea as to weather the content is relevant to them or not. The pages that have the most time spent on them indicate that the content is of value to your online visitors.  The pages with really low page view times may indicate that the page is configured in a way that may not be easily navigated by your online visitor, or that the content needs to be formatted in a more digestible manner.

Another reason as to why your online visitors aren’t staying on your pages very long is that your SEO practices may have inadvertently directed the wrong type of traffic to these pages.  So having said that, your content may be 100% relevant, but the traffic that is finding the content through search engines are not.  In this case you may want to take a look at your Page Name and Search Engine Information.

The Length of Pageview report:

This report indicates the average time your online visitors are spending on your pages.  Take a look at which pages people are spending the most time on and compare them to the pages that people aren't spending time on.  You may find that pages with a lot of external links are the ones that your online visitors are not spending any time on.  This is okay, not every page should require 10 minutes to soak in!

For the pages that your online visitors are not spending enough time on, consider shortening the content, or re-organizing it to be more visually pleasing.  Also, ensure that these pages are properly optimized for search engines, to ensure that the right type of online visitor finds this information.  Then, keep an eye on the Length of Pageview report to see if there is any improvement in time spent on that page.
