A friend of mine once asked me: “Ryan, do you pay yourself?” I thought about it for awhile. Of course I pay myself. I go out for supper, I buy new gadgets, I do things that make me happy. Treating myself implies that I’m paying myself.
Doesn’t it?
This wasn’t what he meant. He said, “You pay for those luxuries. I’m talking about you paying YOURSELF.” When I told him that in the literal sense, I pay myself nothing, he replied with, “That’s odd, I thought for sure you would be worth more than nothing.”
You, like anyone, have bills to pay. Car, mortgage, phone, heat, water, electricity, insurance… and the list goes on. Think of yourself as another bill, another item of importance that has to be paid - and start paying yourself.
You’re worth more than nothing too!
It’s a great way to save some money. If you can find it in your budget to pay yourself, set yourself up as a payee. Determine a certain amount to come out once a month from your account automatically and have it placed into a different account, such as a savings account. Even a very small amount will add up. Once the money has been transferred automatically and the ‘bill’ is paid, it’s out of sight and out of mind. It may be difficult at first, but it won’t be long before you don’t even notice it is gone.
The best part? When that rainy day hits, you have that money for whenever you need it. Figure out what you are worth and start paying yourself.
I think you deserve it, don’t you?
