Fun Widgets for Your Website Gone are the days when websites were dry mediums for providing information in a textual format. Nowadays, you can still provide the information necessary for your business and clients, while adding a bit of fun and interest to your overall design through graphics and photos, as well as through interactive widgets that are, and I speak from experience, a tad addicting. Check out a few of these free widgets: Time Clock – not only does it provide the current time, but if you hover over it with your mouse or click on the time, the date will appear too. This time clock is completely customizable, so that it will match your website. Educational Widgets – providing everything from daily trivia to language translation and learning, these educational widgets get the brain cells going.
Games: Bejeweled - the goal of the game is to get a straight line of the same type of jewel. Sounds a bit lame when you try to explain it, but it is incredibly addicting.
Pacman – the retro arcade game can now be placed on your website. Watch out for the ghosts! Pet Hamster – for the animal lovers out there, here is an interactive pet that sits on your website. You can feed or water him, get him to run on the wheel, or just let him rest. Best of all: no cage to clean and no hamster smell! Music Videos – Hans Christian Anderson once said, “Where words fail, music speaks.” Personally, I like to think he was foreshadowing the ability to include 80’s hair bands like Whitesnake or 80’s Glam Rock bands like Poison on your website (or choose other songs). Smart man, that Hans! "Here I go again on my own..." :)Who doesn’t love a retro game or an animated hamster? All you have to do is visit the corresponding widget webpage, select your choices on how you want the widget to look (colour scheme, hamster name, etc.), copy the code that is generated, and then paste it into an “Advanced Content Module”. Voila! It’s now on your website! Not excited by the widgets I found? You can find the fun widget you’re looking for on one of these sites: While these widgets are fun, they likely aren’t relevant to your core business offering, so are better suited for anywhere other than your homepage. For instance, if you are a Pacman fan, that might be something you put in your bio on your “About Me” page. You can then add a link to a hidden page on your website that includes the Pacman widget. Providing these interesting widgets may work with your overall site and personality, as well as provide something that will make those online visitors come back for more! I’m off to play an intense game of Bejeweled to the sounds of Whitesnake… ~ Tanya Spilchak, Point2 Education Coordinator |
